Former hard-hitting middle order batsman for the Indian national team, coached Kenya in the 2003 Cricket World Cup, and coached the Mumbai Champs in IPL.
He studied and played at Ramnarain Ruia and made his Ranji Trophy debut with Bombay in 1975-76.
He was named the chairman of selectors of the Board of Control for Cricket in India in 2012.
His son Chirag has acted in such films as Kabhi Ajnabi.
He was succeeded by former Indian all-rounder Madan Lal as the Indian National Cricket Manager in 1996.
