She was raised in Port-Au Prince, Haiti and in the Dominican Republic.

She was fluent in several languages, including French, Spanish, English, and Creole.

Family life

Her mother, also a lawyer, was murdered in 1995 for publicly criticizing Haitian President Jean-Bertran Aristide.
