He's cited that his style came from a failure of trying to recreate styles that he admired growing up reading comics, and he found success with the style he found on his own. 

Before Fame

He grew up reading the Daredevil comics and took most of his inspiration in inking from artists like Frank Miller and Klaus Janson.

He received the Sinnott Hall of Fame award at the Inkwell Awards in 2012 for his style of inking in comics.
