Before Fame
She became a member of an amateur Gaelic theater group when she was a teenager. She made her stage debut at Galway's national Irish language theater in 1940.

In 1988, she was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame, two years after her death.
Family Life
Her father Eoghan McKenna was Professor of Mathematics at University College, Galway. From 1956 to 1978 she was married to Denis O'Dea. They had a son named Donnacha O'Dea.
