Wrote composition "Meanwhile - Incidental Music to Imaginary Puppet Plays," which won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Classical Composition in 2013.

He served as composer in residence from 1988 until 1992 for the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.
He was raised in Manhattan. He fathered a son Sandy with his wife Lisa Stidham.
His music was heavily influenced by the work of Igor Stravinsky, medieval music, Tudor church music, bebop, gamelan, and his instructors Leonardo Balada and George Rochberg.
