Doctor known for his groundbreaking work in the field of human organ transplantation. During the 1960s, he became the first surgeon to successfully transplant a human liver.
After graduating from Westminster College in Missouri, he studied neurophysiology at the Northwestern University Medical School.
He published an acclaimed memoir entitled The Puzzle People.
His first marriage, to Barbara June Brothers, produced two sons and one daughter. He later married Joy Denise Conger.
