Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who is considered a pioneer of the Brazilian Tropicália movement. He has been celebrated for releases like Estudando o Samba (1976), which was named as one of the 100 best albums in Brazilian history by Rolling Stone.
He was raised in the small town of Irará in Bahia, Brazil and was heavily influenced by artists like Luiz Gonzaga.
His career experienced a resurgence in the 90s when one of his albums was discovered by David Byrne, who immediately signed him to the Luaka Bop label.
He married Neusa Martins in 1971.
He and Caetano Veloso were featured on the influential Tropicália compilation Tropicália: ou Panis et Circenses (1968).
