Before Fame
He was active in his high school debate team, even winning the Missouri State Debating Championship. He studied law at the University of Kansas City to meet his parents' expectations. He then worked as a lamp salesman, a job that allowed him to support himself financially. He moved to Los Angeles to work in his sister's publishing office while also pursuing acting opportunities. He began working in radio while taking on small acting roles. He hosted the syndicated TV series Science Fiction Theatre from 1955 to 1957.
Trivia
He provided narration for numerous films, including Objective, Burma!, Call Northside 777, and Never Wave at a WAC. He acted in The Night Before the Divorce, Northwest Passage, Millionaires in Prison, and Murder Among Friends. His last acting appearance was in a 1960 episode of the American legal drama Perry Mason titled The Case of the Madcap Modiste.
Family Life
He was born and raised in Sheldon, Missouri. He married Evelyn Jane Esenther in September 1937. He later married actress Myra Bratton in January 1940 and divorced in 1941. He married Phyllis Ruth in 1942, with whom he had a daughter in 1946. He died in Woodland Hills, California at age 69.
