She was born Helga Ursula "Uschi" Glas. She was born and raised in Landau an der Isar, Germany. She married Bernd Tewaag in 1981 until they divorced in 2003. They had three children together named Alex, Ben, and Julia. She married Dieter Herrmann in 2005.
