In the early 1990s, following the death of his brother Sree Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, Uthradom Varma assumed the title of Maharaja of Travancore.
He studied history, economics, and politics at Travancore University and received a special award for his Sanskrit scholarship.
He was the youngest boy born to Travancore Royal Family descendant Sethu Parvathi Bayi. His marriage to Shrimati Radhadevi Pandalai (official title: Ammachi Panapillai Amma) produced a daughter named Parvathidevi Kochamma and a son named Ananthapadmanabhan Thampi.
Born a century apart, he and Rani Lakshmibai were both members of Indian royalty.
