Stellar Award and Soul Train Award-winning gospel singer who has earned extensive acclaim for her many albums, including Chosen, Following Jesus, and Something on the Inside. She has also appeared on Broadway in the 1991 production of Don't Get God Started and on the Oprah Winfrey TV special, The Women of Brewster Place.   

Before Fame

She made her solo debut in 1983 with the album Peace Be Still. The titular track of the album has been considered to be one of her signature songs throughout the duration of her career.

Trivia

She is a 7-time Grammy Award nominee. She has received 4 Best Soul Gospel Performance nominations, 2 Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album nominations, and a nomination for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album. She was also awarded an honorary doctorate degree in theology from Next Dimension University in 2017.

She has 5 children. Her sister Margaret Bell Byars is also a musician.
