Grammy Award-winning saxophonist who is known for fusing jazz with Eastern music.
Though he was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, he lived in both Ohio and Michigan as a child.
He taught music at a number of schools, including the University of Massachusetts and Hampshire College.
In 1973 he married his second wife, Tahira.
In 1949 he was invited by Dizzy Gillespie to tour with his orchestra.
