He graduated from the New South Wales State Conservatory in 1924 and later, the École Normale de Musique de Paris.
His follow-up musicals to "The Sentimental Bloke," "The Girl from the Snowy" and "Marriages Are Made in Heaven," did not experience the same commercial and critical success.
He was born Albert Aarons and legally changed his last name to Arlen in 1948. He married the actress, singer, and playwright Nancy Brown in 1949.
