Twentieth-century Texas Democrat and Mayor of the City of Laredo. During his 1978-1990 tenure as Mayor, he was responsible for the resurfacing of numerous roads in the western city.
During his teenage years, he worked for his father's jewelry company and pursued a career as a boxer; later, he served in the United States Navy and founded a sunglasses manufacturing company.
After moving to Laredo, Texas, Tatangelo sought to overthrow the city government's longstanding "patron" system of favors.
He was born in Providence, Rhode Island, to Italian immigrant parents. His six-decade marriage to Alice Natali DeLong Tatangelo produced three children.
He and fellow Democrat Julian Castro both held office as Mayor of a major Texas city.
