NFL defensive tackle known as the Mad Duck, he played for the Detroit Lions from 1958 to 1962 and from 1964 to 1970. Aside from football, he also starred in ABC's sitcom Webster and made an appearance in Mel Brooks' 1974 comedy Blazing Saddles.

Struggling mightily to adjust to college, he failed to earn a football letter his sophomore year at the University of Iowa.
