Economist and professor who served as the Finance Minister of Chile from March 2006 to March 2010. He has written several books including the novel Vox Populi in 1995.
He and his family moved to the United States from Santiago in 1977 after his father, a radical politician, was exiled.
He has been a consultant to the governments of El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico.
He married journalist Consuela Saavedra and had three children.
