Hong Kong director who got his start as a cinematographer for acclaimed directors like Wong Jing and Wong Kar-wai. He later went on to direct highly successful film franchises like the Young and Dangerous series and the Infernal Affairs trilogy.
After graduating from secondary school, he began working at Shaw Brothers Studios and made his debut as a cinematographer on 1982's Legendary Weapons of China.
In 2002, he was named Best Director at the Hong Kong Film Awards, Golden Bauhinia Awards and Golden Horse Awards for his work on Infernal Affairs.
He married a woman named Angela in 1992. He has children named Liu Jian De, Liu Ying Ye, Liu Wei De and Liu Jun De.
His crime drama Revenge of the Green Dragons was executive produced by Martin Scorsese, who remade Infernal Affairs into the Oscar-winning American film The Departed.
