On October 15, 2011, he won his first WBC Lightweight title; after retaining the title in two straight fights he was defeated by Adrien Broner on November 17, 2012.
He was a dominant amateur boxer before joining the professional ranks.
Following his first loss, on February 4, 2006, he went unbeaten for 16 matches (15 wins and 1 tie), before losing again on February 6, 2010.
His cousin Humberto Soto was a world champion boxer.
He earned his 2011 WBC Lightweight title by defeating Jorge Linares.
