Singer and songwriter whose 1930 version of the song "El Manisero" went on to become one of the first Cuban singles to achieve a million sales. By 1932 it was estimated that he had recorded over 200 numbers.

He worked as a mason while traveling across Cuba to sing.

At the time of his death he was one of the most recorded Cuban singers of the 20th century.

He was married to María de los Ángeles Rodríguez from 1943-1977.
