A linguist and scholar known for his role in establishing the field of Bosnian and Herzegovinan linguistics, he published works on the dialects of Eastern and Central Herzegovina. He received numerous honors, including the Veselin Maslesa Award and the Vuk Award.
He attended the University of Belgrade and later became a philology professor.
He was a member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
His brother, Dzemal Peco, also had a career as a teacher.
He and Cornel Wilde were both celebrated linguists.
