Classical music composer best known for his opera "Anas el-Wugood," which was written between 1960 and 1965 and performed at the Cairo Opera House around 1970.
He studied composition with Aram Khachaturian at the Moscow Conservatory in the late 1950s.
He had a number of pupils, including Jordanian composer Haytham Sukareya.
His daughter Dr. Salwa El-Shawan Castelo-Branco was an ethnomusicologist and professor at the New University of Lisbon in Lisbon, Portugal.
He was a prominent musician in Egypt during the same era as Demis Roussos.
