Affiliated with the Indian National Congress Party, this twentieth-century politician held office as Chief Minister of Punjab from 1992 until his assassination in 1995. Previously, he had served as a Vidhan Sabha (political assembly) member in India's Punjab state.
After graduating from Government College Lahore, he briefly served in the Indian military before beginning his political career.
He was a member of the Sikh faith.
His marriage to Jaswant Kaur Singh resulted in one son (Tej) and one daughter (Gurkanwal), both of whom became politicians.
He and Parkash Singh Badal both held office as Chief Minister of Punjab.
