She met Chagall on a visit to St. Petersburg, where he worked, and they married soon thereafter.

She was the subject of many of her husband's famous paintings, including "Bella with White Collar" from 1917.

Her family was Jewish, and her father was a wealthy Vitebsk jeweler. She and Chagall were married in 1915; they had a daughter, Ida, in 1916.
