He first short story was published in 1972, one year before the political coup in Chile that forced her to relocate to Canada.
She became known for writing all of her work in Spanish and in English, doing all of it herself instead of relying on a translator.
She married at eighteen and has two daughter in Chile. She later divorced her first husband, remarried, and had a son in Canada.
She attended the University of Chile, where fellow poet and activist Pablo Neruda also matriculated.
