Controversial coach of the Florida Gators football who led them to the Top 10 and then was fired for violating many NCAA rules.
He never played football until high school, but was good enough to be recruited to the University of Alabama, where he became an All-SEC guard.
He admitted to his violations in a 1995 Dateline interview, saying 'There wasn't room for anything but winning. Nothing. Winning was the sole obsession, to a fault.'
He grew up in Albertville, Alabama, with neither parent of his completing an education beyond the fifth grade.
He was coached at the University of Alabama by Paul Bear Bryant.
