Before Fame

He began fencing in elementary school when he was 10 years old. He quickly became successful and won awards such as Most Promising Young Athlete at the 2013 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards, and Outstanding Junior Athlete at the Hong Kong Sports Institute in 2014. He participated in multiple championships before making his Olympic debut at the Rio 2016 Olympics. 

Trivia

He became the first Hong Kong athlete to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals. He became the first man to retain the Olympic foil crown since 1956 in 2024. He inspired a surge in interest in fencing after his performance in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics which fencing schools coining the term "Ka-long effect."
