Dancer and actor who became a Tony Award-winner for his portrayal of the eponymous Billy Elliot in the Broadway production of the famed musical.
After moving to San Diego for his father's job with The Scripps Research Institute, he began taking classical ballet more seriously. He received a full merit scholarship to the American Ballet Theatre's Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School.
He is also trained in classical piano. He left theater for 2-plus years to serve in the US Army.
His father David Alvarez-Carbonell was a professor while his mother Yanek was an actress and director of theater.
