Former politician and labour member, who became one of the first women in Britain to be elected as a Member of Parliament in 1924. She represented both Jarrow and Middlesbrough East in Parliament.
She studied History at the University of Manchester before becoming a founding member of the Communist Party in 1920.
She was the Minister of Education from 1945 until her death in 1947 from an overdose of barbiturates.
She was born in Ardwick, Manchester.
