Journalist, sociologist, and teacher who is known for having written for and been published in several major press outlets including The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and The New York Times. She is also the author of several books including Ghosts in the Schoolyard: Racism and School Closings on Chicago's South Side as well as Electric Arches.
She attended the University of Chicago and earned her MAT in Elementary Education from Dominican University. She published her first book Electric Arches in 2017 through Haymarket Books.
She has earned several awards and honors including the 2018 Alex Award from the Young Adult Library Services Association of the American Library Association and the Best Poetry Book of 2017 from the Chicago Review of Books.
She married Dr. Damon Jones who is an economist and associate professor at the Harris School of Public Policy.
She launched a podcast in 2018 called Bughouse Square which is based on archival footage and oral histories provided by Studs Terkel.
