Directed the 2010 documentary The Cove, which received the Academy Award for Best Documentary. His 2008 documentary Crazy Love won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary Feature. He gained attention for his work on the hit HBO series Succession.

In 1986, he founded Naked Angels Theater Company in New York City.
