Before Fame
He initially started out as a model after graduating with a degree in electrical engineering from Chuo University in Tokyo. He started his acting career playing the legendary Yagyu Jubei in the 1983 samurai period drama Unmeitōge. He got his first film credit in the movie Haikarasan ga Tōru in 1988.
Trivia
He received the Best Actor award at the 63rd Mainichi Film Award in 2009. He won for his performances in the movies Still Walking and Aoi Tori. He has also won Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor in various Japanese award shows since then.
Family Life
He is the youngest of three children. He married his wife in 2008. Together, they have two children.
