English teacher who became the Willard Professor of Classics at Stanford University in 1995 and is one of the founders of the Stanford Archaeology Center.
He studied ancient history and archaeology at Birmingham University and earned his PhD from Cambridge University.
He has published many books including The Measure of Civilisation: How Social Development Decides the Fate of Nations in 2013.
He grew up with his family in the United Kingdom.
Like him, scientist Philip Zimbardo has also worked as a professor at Stanford University.
