Gospel singer and vocalist who is best known for being a longtime vocalist and frontman of the legendary music group The Blind Boys of Alabama, a group known for blending traditional Black gospel, soul, blues, and Americana music.
Before fame
He sang with the original Blind Boys members as a student at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind. He officially joined the touring/recording group around 1982 when he made his first recorded appearance with The Blind Boys of Alabama on I'm a Soldier in the Army of the Lord.
Trivia
He became one of The Blind Boys of Alabama's most recognizable longtime frontmen and continued performing with the group into his 90s. He retired from performing after recording Echoes of the South which won the 2024 Grammy Award for Best Roots Gospel Album. He was part of the group's legacy as five-time Grammy winners, Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipients, Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductees, and Alabama Music Hall of Fame inductees.
