While conscious immediately after being struck by a hook from Sugar Ray Robinson in the 9th round, he soon after lost his consciousness. He passed away within hours of being transported to Cleveland's St. Vincent's Charity Hospital.
His parents were Edward Delaney and Marie Elodie Barret. He was of Creole descent.
Following his death in 1947, criminal charges were brought against Sugar Ray Robinson, including manslaughter, before eventually being dropped.
