Eleven fights into his professional career, he was matched up against the veteran Earnie Shavers, who had a 42-2 record; Young was knocked out, but it would be his only loss over the next three years.

In one of the biggest matches of the decade, he fought against the top-ranked boxer in the world, Ken Norton, in 1977; Norton won the fight in a controversial decision that left many Young supporters incensed.
