Twentieth-century British fiction writer, teacher, and publisher known for his eccentric persona. He is best remembered for his acclaimed novel The Harpole Report.

Before Fame

He was a poor student and could not gain acceptance to a teachers' college. Nevertheless, he taught as an un-credentialed teacher at South Milford Primary School.

Trivia

He founded a publishing company called The Quince Tree Press.

Family Life

After completing his service as a World War II-era Royal Air Force photographer, he married Sally Hilda Gladys "Sally" Sexton. He died of cancer at the age of eighty-one.

Associated With

His 1980 novel A Month in the Country was adapted into a 1987 film starring British actor Colin Firth.
