Late dog musher widely known as the father of the famed Iditarod sled dog race. He participated in the race seventeen times from 1974 to 1997.
He served in the 6th Field Artillery Regiment in the U.S. Army during the 40's.
He helped the Iditarod trail become one of the first four National Historic Trails in the United States.
His father was an oil field worker and had two other sons named James and Ray.
He paved the way for future Iditarod winners like Lance Mackey.
