Before Fame
He learned to sing in church choirs and practiced guitar on borrowed or makeshift instruments due to limited resources while growing up. He studied agronomy and worked construction jobs while still pursuing music after moving to Santo Domingo. He was discovered by producer José Luis Segura in 1993 who helped him record his debut album Con Amor, which officially launched his professional music career. His 1996 album Con Más Amor became his breakthrough and allowed him to quit construction work to pursue music full-time.

His full name is José María Veras Batista. He grew up as the fourth of thirteen children, raised by Sotero Veras and María del Carmen Batista in rural Cevicos, Dominican Republic.
