Well known for his 2004, Australian chart-topping single "These Kids," this rap-rock vocalist and beatboxer released albums titled Joel Turner and the Modern Day Poets (2004) and Out of the Box (2007) and was nominated for numerous APRA and ARIA awards.
He began singing and playing the guitar during his childhood years. He developed his talent for beatboxing because he could not afford a drum set but was still intent upon practicing rhythms.
He was the World Beatboxing Champion from 2005 until 2009.
He and his four siblings were raised by a single mother and grew up in relative poverty in Brisbane, Australia. His father, a musician, left the family early on and died of a drug overdose when Turner was twelve years old.
Pop singer Axle Whitehead contributed to Turner's single "Scatbox."
