About

British linguist known for his contributions to the field of linguistics at institutions such as University of EdinburghUniversity of Cambridge, and Indiana University. He was an expert in the Russian language and a founder of the Journal of Linguistics publication. In 1977, he published a two-volume book titled Semantics. 

Before Fame

He attended St Ann's RC School in Stretford and went on to study at St Bede's College in Manchester. Afterward, he attended Christ's College in Cambridge where he earned degrees in Classics and Education.

Trivia

He served in the British Navy for two years. He created the Bongo-Bongo constructed language as a tool for his students.

He and his wife Danielle had two daughters named Caroline and Kathleen.
