An American journalist and author, she wrote such novels as We Need to Talk About Kevin and The Post-Birthday World.
She taught metal-smithing at Buck's Rock Performing and Creative Arts Camp in New Milford, Connecticut.
She won the 2005 Orange Prize.
She was born in North Carolina. She later married jazz drummer Jeff Williams.
Her novel, We Need to Talk About Kevin, was made into a film starring Tilda Swinton.
