Republican politician who became a US Senator from Illinois in 2010. He previously served as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Illinois's 10th district from 2001 to 2010.
He studied at Cornell and the London School of Economics and got his law degree from Georgetown University before serving as an intelligence officer for the Navy during Operation Allied Force in Yugoslavia.
He received many Navy awards, but one which he claimed, 'Navy Intelligence Officer of the Year,' he did not have.
His wife Kimberly Vertolli is also a Naval Intelligence Officer, and the two met in the Pentagon.
In 2000, he was part of the air campaign against Saddam Hussein, Operation Northern Watch.
