He became acquainted with his future Asian Kung-Fu Generation bandmates Takahiro Yamada and Kensuke Kita while all three musicians were studying at Kanto Gakuin University in Kanazawa-ku, Yokohama, Japan. He graduated from the university with a degree in economics.
