She studied history at Rhode Island College.
She authored more than ten books on genealogy between 1998 and 2011, and she also became a well-known blogger. Her topics of expertise, in addition to genealogy, include the history of costumes, art history, and cultural anthropology.
She was born, raised, and based in New England, and she worked for both the Rhode Island Historical Society and The New England Historic Genealogical Society.
She and author/editor Esther Forbes both worked for Houghton Mifflin at one point in their careers.
