Long-distance swimmer famous for crossing he English Channel more than thirty times. He is a member of the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame and a recipient of the Wheeler Memorial Award.
He began swimming at fourteen and became the youngest member of the Brighton Swimming Club committee in 1957.
He became the first person in history to swim across all fourteen miles of Loch Tay, located in Scotland.
He was born Michael Peter Read in Brighton.
He is famous for swimming the English Channel, much like Matthew Webb, who became the first documented person to do so in 1875.
