Defensive end who starred at the University of Missouri from 2009 to 2013 and became the first openly gay player in the NFL after being drafted in the 7th round by the St. Louis Rams in 2014.
He played offensive tackle and defensive end at Hitchcock High School in Texas, and was a first-team All-District selection as a defensive end during all four years of his career.
In his senior year at Missouri, he was a first-team All-SEC selection and a Consensus All-American.
He was born to JoAnn and Michael Sam as the seventh of eight children in the family.
Fellow defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, out of South Carolina, became the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft; Sam went 249th overall.
