Actress who became popular for her role on the British stage as well as screen with starring roles in Keeping Up Appearances and Hetty Wainthropp Investigates.
Her acting debut came in 1954 in an adaptation of the operetta The Duenna, and she soon built a prominent career on stage.
She won the Laurence Olivier Award in Candide in 1988, and was the subject of an episode of BBC documentary Funny Women.
She was never married and had no children.
She starred opposite David Janson in the soap opera Keeping Up Appearances.
