English philosopher most recognized for his work on the theory of identity.
He was a graduate of Balliol College, Oxford, in England. He was a professor at the University of Birmingham from 1951 to 1966. He then served as professor of logic in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Leeds.
He was selected as a Fellow of the British Academy in 1965.
He married noted philosopher Elizabeth Anscombe.
He and scientist Paul Nurse were both affiliated with the University of Birmingham during their careers.
