R&B bass singer who recorded hits like "Sincerely" and "The Ten Commandments of Love" with the vocal group The Moonglows.
He released "I Just Can't Tell No Lie" on his own label, selling ten thousand copies with barely any airplay, and then the ballad "Sincerely," which topped the R&B charts.
After meeting Marvin Gaye at the Howard Theatre in Washington, he joined up with Gaye's group, The Marquees.
He was born in Magnolia, Mississippi.
His group, The Moonglows, contributed to the soundtrack of 1956 film Rock, Rock, Rock, which gave Britain its first glimpse of Chuck Berry and other pioneers of rock 'n' roll.
