American explorer who was involved in the infamous almost 30 year Hatfield-McCoy feud which caused him to lose five of his children to violence.
He was born the fourth of thirteen children and grew up on the Kentucky side of Tug Fork.
He served in the Confederate Army during the opening years of the war.
He married his first cousin, Sarah McCoy in 1849 and they had sixteen children together.
Like him, William Barksdale also fought in the Confederate Army.
